RCC award winners include 13 United Methodists
5/4/2001 News media contact: Tim Tanton · (615) 742-5470 · Nashville, Tenn. By Barbara Nissen* MINNEAPOLIS (UMNS) - The Religion Communicators Council (RCC) has honored 13 United Methodists for their work during the past year.
The United Methodists joined some 50 others receiving DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Communications Awards during a ceremony on April 26, the opening day of the RCC convention. The three-day event drew 150 members of the interfaith organization of religion communicators.
Author Terry Hershey spoke on the event's theme, "Nurturing the Seeds of Faith." The author of Soul Gardening: Cultivating the Good Life, Hershey urged the group to take time to rest, renew, and nurture the soul.
Other keynote speakers were Syl Jones, columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper, and Kathryn Lanpher, host of Minnesota Public Radio's call-in show, "Midmorning." Each of the speakers addressed the growing role of religion communications.
The convention was capped by a gala honoring 16 secular media organizations or individuals for excellence in the communication of religious issues, values and themes. Each honoree received a Wilbur Award.
United Methodists receiving DeRose-Hinkhouse awards were:
· Sandra Brands, Minnesota Annual Conference editor, award of merit for magazine article; · Paul Jeffrey, United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, award of merit for magazine article; · Barbara Dunlap-Berg and Fred Rowles, United Methodist Communications (UMCom), award of merit for promotional/informational video; · Steve Horswill-Johnston, UMCom, award of excellence for "Products and Services Tour" on CD-ROM; · Bill Wolfe, UMCom, award of merit for radio public relations, and awards of excellence for the "Passages" and "Survivors" radio series; · Frank DeGregorie and Emily Grote, Board of Global Ministries, award of merit for publication cover design; · DeGregorie, award of merit for overall publication design; · Alma Graham, Christie House and Sharon Maeda, Board of Global Ministries, award of merit for overall publication design, and award of excellence for publication cover illustration; and · Jeffrey, House and John Goodwin, Board of Global Ministries, and Mike DuBose, UMCom, award of merit for color photography series.
United Methodists elected to continue serving on the RCC Board of Directors include Lesley Crosson (Board of Global Ministries), Mike Hickcox (New England Conference), Barbara Nissen (UMCom) and Shirley Struchen (UMCom).
Earlier in the week, the Associated Church Press honored five Methodist publications at its annual awards banquet, April 24.
The Washington Area's UMConnection won an award of merit in the category of best in class, regional newspaper, and an award of merit for its Nov. 1 front page.
UM Reporter was honored for its General Conference coverage in four categories. It received an award of excellence for its news story, "Agony Grips General Conference," by Paul McKay; an award of excellence for convention or meeting coverage by a newspaper for McKay's reports from General Conference; an honorable mention in the newspaper front-page category for its March 3, 2000, issue; and an award of merit for a photo by Alice Michael Clements, published May 19, 2000.
The Indiana Area's Hoosier United Methodist won an honorable mention in best in class, regional newspaper.
Response magazine, published by the Women's Division of the Board of Global Ministries, received an award of merit for convention or meeting coverage by a magazine for Dana E. Jones' General Conference coverage
Response and Weavings tied as recipients of the award of merit for special interest magazines.
Weavings also received awards of merit for magazine graphics for an entire issue and for a first-person account by Kirsten Johnson Ingram titled "The Hunt for Shekinah." Mary Rose O'Reilly's article "Streams of Mercy" earned an award of excellence for devotional/inspirational articles of more than 1,200 words. Weavings also tied for honorable mention for a 1-, 2- or 3-color magazine cover. The Upper Room publishes Weavings.
Alive Now!, another Upper Room publication, received an award of excellence in poetry for Angela Rigby's poem, "And the Whole House Was Filled."
New World Outlook, published by the Board of Global Ministries, won an honorable mention for the graphics it its spring 2000 issue.
The Upper Room received an award of excellence for its Web site.
The AME Church Review won an award of merit for A'lelia Bundles' biographical profile, "Building a Firm Foundation: Madam C. J. Walker."
Open Hands, the magazine published by the Reconciling Ministries Network, formerly the Reconciling Congregations Program, received an honorable mention in the fiction category for "Our Organist" by Michael Lindvall. Reconciling Ministries Network is an unofficial United Methodist group.
